Get academic: Share a recently published academic article or journal in your subject area that you would like to read and why.
Although not necessarily academic, Edutopia has so many great articles about all things education. Their recent article 3 Ways to Make Gratitude a Habit in Your Classroom | Edutopia really caught my interest. Recently, I have been working on classroom culture, inclusiveness, and fostering a positive environment.
Develop professionally: Share an upcoming conference or academic event that you would like to participate in and why.
There is a Ted Talk (TEDxJesterCirED | TED) about education in March that I think would be interesting to attend because of the wide array of other educators who would attend. Educators learn the most from each other!
Build life skills: Host a scavenger hunt activity for your students on life skills or social-emotional learning and take a picture of items collected by students.
We had “Cool Buddy Day”, where students wore sunglasses and brought in a stuffed animal. We spoke about social-emotional wellness and the fact that sometimes you just need a buddy to hug!
Create awareness: Implement an activity with students to overcome any one stereotype towards culture, ethnicity, gender, or learning differences.
Since the beginning of the semester, we have been incorporating the Kindness Ninjas into our SEL curriculum. We have read many of the books (Amazon.com: Ninja Life Hacks) in class, and even sent home the kindness pledge for them to practice with their parents. These books teach inclusivity!
Create a memory: Take a picture with your cohort with any educational prop.
Find common ground: Show pictures of a hobby or interest that you share with a teacher colleague at your school.
Travel! Another teacher and I went to Korea together!
Share an achievement: Share the biggest learning challenge you faced in the program and how you overcame the challenge.
The biggest challenge for me has been starting a new job at the same time as clinical. My new job has required a lot of overtime hours and adjusting to the fact that it is accepted to do so within my school’s culture has been difficult. Going in, I did not expect it to be that way. It has been so busy, overwhelming, and nearly impossible to manage my time. My way of overcoming it has been making sure I take time to spend with my husband and friends in order to maintain sanity!
Get personal: Share one professional ethic that you always live by.
Set a good example for your students. We are playing a huge part in the life of a little human!
Get finished: Complete and submit your e-Portfolio that you started in the beginning of the program.
You’re looking at it! I must admit, there is more I would like to add when time allows me to do so.
